How to Write 'How to Articles' For the Internet

Many online article authors write 'how to' articles and there is a good bit of wisdom behind this trend. You see, "how to" articles and books are favored by readers in both the real world and the virtual one. SEO (search engine optimization) writers also realize that Internet Surfers will often actually type in 'How to' and then the rest of the question directly into the most popular search engines to learn 'how to' do something. It therefore makes sense to give the online users what they want.

But, have you ever considered a strategy when writing 'how to articles' for the Internet? First, you need to know a few things and plan your article in advance. You must get yourself into the readers mindset and write the article from their perspective. Let's say you wanted to know 'how to' do whatever you are writing about or whatever your expertise is; well, think for a second. Those looking for this information are not you, they do not have your level of knowledge in the topic and they just want to know how to do something.

Realize that many people are afraid to ask, but when it comes to searching the Internet, they are fearless and thus, when they come to your article they may have very little understanding in the subject, but they may on the other hand have a good amount of experience there, but they want to make sure they do not make any mistakes. So, you must be thinking here as you write.

Most folks reading 'how to' articles like lists, simple instructions either with bullets or numbers; a step-by-step set of instructions, like a recipe or instructions that come with something you buy telling you how to put it together. After writing 15,000 online articles and over 500 How To Articles, I have found that it's best to start with a lead in paragraph, describing the need to know how to do it and why it's important to do it right, perhaps a warning or two of what happens if it is done wrong.

Then you can walk them through the "how to" part with simple lists, instructions and tips. Once you are completed with that portion of the article summarize what you have discussed and any exceptions to the rule and suggest other alternatives if any. Finally, wish them good luck, give them confidence and make them smile.
